Commander’s

The
musings and observations of your
Gary Waltrip, Commander
Camp 1440, Sons of Confederate Veterans
Men of Camp 1440:
Some months ago the commander of Camp 1440, Roy
Nunn, suffered a heart attack. At that
time he did not have the support of an Adjutant and was unable to keep up with
the paperwork of the Camp. For that
reason, dues notices were not sent out and everyone but life members was dropped
from the active rolls of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
The California Division has appointed me acting
commander to get the Camp reactivated and all members back on the rolls. To do that, I will need you to send me a
check for $30, payable to Sons of Confederate Veterans, as soon as possible. The Sons of Confederate Veterans are now
prorating dues payments for those who join late. For that reason your $30 will pay your dues
through the rest of this fiscal year, ending
This fee includes a reinstatement fee of $5;
however, the California Division has agreed to waive the Division dues of that
same amount so that no member has to pay for a situation that was not of his
own making.
Once the Camp is back online, we can have a
discussion and a meeting to elect officers and organize the Camp. In the recent past, the Camp has had a small
core of activist members who want to meet regularly and have activities, with a
larger portion who only wish to participate passively. This is not a criticism; we are all busy
people and career and family must take priority over other things. I would suspect that the Camp will continue
along these lines. If you don’t have the
time, don’t volunteer for an office and no one will complain, nor will you be
considered a second class member for your decision. Membership will be guilt-free!
Please send me your check for $30 as soon as possible. Life members owe nothing.
Sincerely yours,
Gary Waltrip, Commander
