The
Sons of Confederate Veterans is made up of descendants of Confederate
soldiers, sailors and marines or those who materially aided the South during
its war for independence.
To
join, you must prove your ancestry which can be as easy as giving us the
names of your direct or collateral ancestors. If you don't know the names
of your ancestors, you can call or visit the Federal Depository of Records
(such as the one in San Bruno) and check census
records. Genealogists are also present at the depository to help you
search the census records. A search can take as little as 15
minutes. You can also contact the archives of the state from which the
soldier fought and obtain a copy of the veteran's military service
record. All Southern states' archives have microfilm records of their
Confederate soldiers. You can get a copy for a nominal fee. You can also search the National Archives database
online.
National dues are $25 for the first year and $20 for
succeeding years. Camp dues are currently $5, and Division dues
are $5. Your dues help pay for Confederate Veteran magazine, a
beautiful SCV membership certificate,
preservation of Civil War sites and heritage defense. Camp dues pay for
a camp newsletter, events, heritage defense and projects. Division dues help pay for the free
genealogy service we offer to members and prospective members.
Please contact SCV California
Division Adjutant Vernon Padgett for
further information and a membership application.
